RICK SPINRAD, Ph.D.: KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Dr. Richard W. (Rick) Spinrad is a Professor of Oceanography at Oregon State University (OSU), member of the Ocean Studies Board of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, and President of the Marine Technology Society (MTS).  In 2016 he retired as Chief Scientist of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), where he had been appointed by President Barack Obama in 2014. 

An internationally recognized scientist and executive with more than 35 years of experience, Dr. Spinrad was the Vice President for Research at OSU, and from 2003 until 2010 was the head of NOAA’s Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research and the National Ocean Service.

How to Avoid the Legal Pitfalls of Early Stage Companies:  

C corp, S corp, LLC -- how do you choose which one is best for you? How exactly do you figure out founder’s equity? Who do you really need on your startup team? Listen to experienced lawyers and entrepreneurs who have been there talk about some of the legal pitfalls they have seen in early-stage companies and how to avoid them.

OSU Startup Creation, Tech Commercialization, and Intellectual Property Protection De-Mystified:

You might want to launch a startup or explore options for getting your technology out there - but what do you do next? You’re a researcher with a compelling invention. Why is intellectual property protection important - do you ALWAYS need it - and what are your options for IP protection? You’re launching a startup and realize you need to license a technology from OSU. How exactly does this negotiation process work and what can you expect? Hear from the OSU Advantage Accelerator and Impact offices as they de-mystify the startup and technology commercialization process and talk about the resources available to help you in this process in this interactive session.

Funding Sources: from Innovation to Market -- and Beyond

Learn about the many sources of Oregon grant and investment funds available to take an invention from the lab to a startup and beyond, and meet the people in the ecosystem who can help you move forward in your funding journey.

Learn why innovation and entrepreneurship growth is critical to growing and sustaining OSU and the state of Oregon, how OSU-born entrepreneurial leaders have made an impact on Oregon’s economy, how OSU is continuing to build on that legacy today and in the future, and how our programs and resources are available to the community to help accelerate economic growth. Celebrate with us as we recognize some regional entrepreneurial ecosystem movers and shakers that make this growth possible! 

 

5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.  | RAISING UP Companies to Shape our Future

Hear how companies in the OSU family are making an impact on our economy and our future. Watch budding new startups compete for audience choice award, and find out about an exciting new opportunity for entrepreneurs.

  • Commercialization Challenges and Successes Panel: Receive insight from three tech entrepreneurs as they share their biggest commercialization challenges and success stories. Panelists include Rita Hansen of Onboard Dynamics, Mike Brown of eMision, and Jen Akeroyd of SUTUREGARD Medical. Panel will be moderated by Katie Pettinger.
  • Startup Pitches for the People’s Choice Award: Listen to several Accelerate graduate companies compete for prize money! The winner of the pitch competition will chosen by audience vote, so come prepared to recognize the best of the group!
  • Funding Opportunities: Before heading to the reception, we’ll close out the event with announcements about two new available funding opportunities.
