As Intellectual Property & Contracts Manager, Susan's areas of responsibilities include the following:

  • Managing the intellectual property (IP) and contracts Inteum database, including administrative oversight of invention disclosures, internal docketing of patent applications, prosecution, and maintenance fees.
  • Technical assistance to faculty, staff and student inventors with OSU's Inventor Portal online system for disclosing new inventions.
  • Coordinating with inventors and outside counsel to obtain patent documents, including assignments, declarations, powers of attorney, and instructions for maintenance fees.
  • Preparing patent documents and recording assignments for in-house provisional applications filed by OSU patent agents.
  • Processing and administrative management of filing new Plant Variety Protection applications with the USDA.
  • In compliance with Bayh-Dole Act, reporting and tracking federally funded inventions, patents, and revenue reports through iEdison database and in communication with Federal technology transfer personnel.
  • Providing innovation metrics and data reports to University leadership, OSU community, and the public.
  • Supervising administrative support staff responsible for processing invention disclosures, confidentiality agreements, material transfers, industry contracts, federal invention reporting, marketing of technology, and maintenance of the Advantage Impact website.

Susan has worked in IP administrative management since 2005 when she joined Strands, Inc. as their IP & Corporate Paralegal, later to become their IP Manager. Strands is a local start-up founded in 2004 by OSU affiliates. Susan earned a Paralegal Certificate from University of Washington in 2004, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Oregon State University in 1992.
